Leaderboards get a mixed reputation in education research, and for good reason: a single global ranking mostly motivates the top 1% and discourages everyone else. The design details decide whether competition helps or hurts.
QuizPrepHub's leaderboards are deliberately segmented — by grade, subject, school, and month. A Grade 5 student in Lagos isn't competing against a Grade 12 student in Seoul; they're competing in dozens of smaller races they can realistically win. Monthly resets mean the 1st of every month is a fresh start.
The result is what psychologists call 'attainable challenge': a rank that's close enough to fight for. That's the version of competition that produces more practice, not less.
